About me
So who is this UnimatrixRed?
Hello and welcome to my 3D printing blog site. A place to post about current projects, gather ideas from others in the community, and show some of my prints all in one spot.
Who am I? Just an average guy who got into 3D printing one day. Well, it all started in 2018 with a Prusa mk2.5. 3D printing sounded like the perfect hobby to be creative, and I figured the technology was around long enough to jump in safely. Prusa seemed to be the right choice. Being a tech lover and tinkerer, the unassembled kit was extra fun. The way the company created a very consumer-friendly assembly manual and thoughtful design made the build really fun.
After the first small prints came out well, it was time to go bigger. I was overwhelmed by the amount of objects I could make right away. Thingiverse was the place to go for the widest variety of models. It seemed there was a 'thing' for absolutely every need. My favorite subject being science fiction, I went looking for lightsabers, naturally.
Up came a ton of incredible saber models designed by the talented CaseStudyno8. It was a nice touch that his models were broken into parts to make the painting and end results look sharp. His artful diagrams and instructive descriptions presented welcoming model kits, where all you needed was patience and some glue. The obsession started there. I was on a mission to print every one of his lightsabers, shelf space be damned.
Overwhelming amounts of filaments were purchased. It literally became a lightsaber factory. Somewhere in there I started learning how to design models using Blender freeware. Figured out how to make remixes of some lightsaber parts and had fun sharing them on Thingiverse. Got the hang of designing custom display stands with multicolor logo tags. At some point I had all the lightsabers...
Star Trek is my other favorite franchise. Couldn't find many free quality Trek props to print though. Maybe I was just picky. During the pandemic there was a lot of time available, and I ended up designing a lot of Star Trek props I thought would be easy and look neat. From Geordi's VISOR to the TNG tricorder, it was a blast bringing these kits to life. But there's much more to come.
These days I'm also working on my own versions of some popular lightsabers, similar to the excellent ones by CaseStudyno8 but with extra accuracy based on closeup photos of screen used props. Its pretty fun. By the way, all my models are now being published only on Printables.com. Come check them out.
Thank you for taking the time to explore my little corner on the web. Hope you enjoy and come back!
